The Concept of improvisation has long repelled and excited me, for it contains the possibilities of humiliation and illumination. Like Beethoven, John Coltrane elevated improvisation as a spiritual course. Going out and coming back. Offering up a melodic theme, going off to talk to God, then returning to talk to us. - Patti Smith
